SCMP : Nightclub Boujis back in town, and intending to stay. Next stop is the mainland
2012-10-23
Even before Matt Hermer set up a pop-up Boujis for three nights at The Space in Sheung Wan two years ago, he had wanted to bring his prestigious London nightclub to Hong Kong. London's Boujis is known for the frequent visits of young royals and A-listers.
"I think [the pop-up] gave us an insight into the local market and encouraged us to look for something more permanent here," Hermer said.
The members-only club on Central's Pottinger Street opened on Thursday night. More than 300 VIPs attended the party, including businessman David Tang Wing-cheung, singer Sandy Lam Yik-lin and Olivier Rousteing, French fashion brand Balmain's designer.
"We are very serious about the membership for many reasons," Hermer said. "We don't have a big capacity in here and we want to be able to provide good service and make sure our customers are taken care of. It's not quite as rigorous as the Hong Kong Jockey Club, but we do offer lots of benefits and international events."
The former banker is getting ready to celebrate his London club's 10th anniversary, and believes that the local branch can weather Hongkongers' ever-changing tastes.
"I have to work hard and believe in the concept. There are clubs here that have run for ages," he said. "I think if you get it right, you can succeed. All the ingredients are here, so let's see how it goes."
Hermer also revealed that he was interested in doing business on the mainland.
"It makes sense for Boujis to open in Hong Kong because a lot of members here have been to our club in London. We want to go to China, so it's good to start here first."
