XINMSN : Sandy Lam is Kim Robinson's muse

With a close-knit friendship spanning a quarter of a decade, Kim Robinson and Sandy Lam are more than just chummy pals and painting buddies

If you haven't already heard, celebrity hairstylist and renowned hair maestro, Kim Robinson, has temporarily shelved aside his trusty scissors in favour of canvases and paintbrushes.

Speaking with xinmsn in an interview at the opening ceremony of Kim's first art exhibition, Wishful Thinking, in Singapore at M.A.D., Hong Kong Cantopop singer Sandy Lam continuously sang praises of her old friend, "The first time I saw Kim's painting, I was very, very impressed.

"It's very expressive, colourful, and there's a lot of texture in it at the same time -- a lot of layer and depth. I had no idea that he paints. I was so amazed and asked 'Kim is that you work?!'" (laughs)

Touched by Sandy's heartening statement, an abashed Kim gushed in response, "I'm definitely going to make your hair beautiful for your whole life, and your next life! Ok?!"

Taking their friendship from hair salon to art studio, the pair likened their mini art sessions to "kids playing together."

"I look forward to doing painting with Kim. He always gives me so many ideas -- like what he does in hairstyling for all these years. When we paint together, he shows me a lot of techniques and ways, Sandy delightfully enthused.

When asked if they would consider throwing a joint art exhibition together, the well-mannered crooner shyly commented that she was "not qualified to do it" while Kim lamented, "norr am I, actually," evoking a roomful of laughter with his self-deprecating remark.

The candid one shared that he was "talked into doing this" by Jasmine, owner of Museum of Art and Design, and feels "a little shy" to be treated like a top artist with paintings decorating every inch of the museum's walls.

Although the 53-year-old is doubtful of throwing another exhibition again, his painting pal confidently countered that she thinks there might be "more to come".

In Wishful Thinking, Kim's works are mostly depicted by abstract human figures. We asked the renowned hair coiffeur if he would ever consider painting a portrait of his closest chum, Sandy.

"I don't think I'm that talented, but I'd love to actually," he modestly answered.

Though, it looks like the unassuming one has little to worry about judging by Sandy's reassuring reply. "He has done a series [of paintings] on models doing catwalks and stuff. Really beautiful eyes; really beautiful colours and texture.

"I'm sure if you decide to do portraits, I would volunteer to be a model," she beamed.

The duo displayed such strong rapport and sound understanding of each other in the interview, the relationship between Kim and Sandy definitely goes beyond that of hairstylist and client, confidantes, and painting buddies.

"When Sandy's onstage, she always surprises me. She's got the most unusual way of pitching notes and things. It's un-commercial. She inspires me to see what can be done.

"She is definitely a muse," says Kim, as he throws a fond glance at Sandy.

Apart from the likes of Sandy, Chinese actress Vicki Zhao, who recently gave birth to a baby girl in Singapore less than a month ago, also graced the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Kim's first art exhibition at MAD.

All the paintings on exhibition will be on sale. Proceeds from the sale of one major painting, Lovers, will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

Wishful Thinking is currently on display at the Museum of Art and Design (M.A.D.). The exhibition will run from 8 to 21 May.
